The Challenge
From Dream To Action
Tom Roberts—race car driver, stunt pilot, coach, speaker, author, and studier of neuroscience—came to GIRVIN with an idea to build a brand around the concept of the flow state. Over the course of a group of planning and exploratory sessions, GIRVIN’s team built visual models of an iconic representation for the concept of flow and articulated the concepts into a book cover form.
The Solution
Going With The Flow
We built a brand design language around a whorling brush drawing on Japanese handmade paper—which has its beginning point, an origination, which flows outwardly to an expression of action and outward flow. Rather than the closed brushstroke of Zen inspiration—the ensō—the circle form of nothingness and everythingness, manifested as a state of enlightenment by Zen masters, then became a whirl of energy. To support the detailed explorations of Tom’s visioning, we developed a customized typeface a modern san serif that was founded on classical proportions.
“
Everyone loves it—the jacket concept. As always you have created EXACTLY what was in my mind’s eye.
The book cover is blowing people’s minds. It is just so perfect.” “
