I was thinking, for some time, about what would be a good opening to this year. Would it be some meditation on what the year might hold? About erecting yet another cairn in the wind and storm-riven shores of the island. The symbolism of incessant rain? Some writing about a natural discovering — an epiphanic experience? A dream drawing. Some thing, scene? Ancient etymology, perhaps?

But then I thought about Paula — and she’s kind of like me, in age, her love of type and yet again, has — perhaps like me — a sense about the philosophy of design in action. A personal passion. The meditation on the work. I’m sure that you do that, as well?

So my opening to this year is about opening. Opening up. To passion, to your philosophy of action — telling a story about it. Sharing your thinking. Opening YOUR channels. Up!

I met her in Salt Lake City, judging a competition together, along with her husband, Seymour Chwast, the illustrator and cofounder of PushPin Studios. And we just stayed in touch, off and on.

Here’s a piece on her.

Nice.

Here’s to hoping that everything you do this year is happy, intriguing, compelling, adventuresome, satisfying. Impassioned.
